In my travels among a few islands in the Philippines and in the mountain provinces up north I never fail to see foreigners. And they are not merely visiting the country but they have opted to live here for good.
What is it that makes foreigners want to retire in the Philippines?
First and foremost I have got to say it’s the people. The number one trait of Filipinos is hospitality. We like to make visitors feel very much welcome.
For example, if you happen to go in the house were the family is having dinner, Filipinos will always invite you to join them.
And during fiestas (town festivals), you must eat in every house you visit. That is why if I were you I would make sure to eat lightly so you could accommodate every host you visit.
The people are friendly and very sociable.
Secondly, there are a lot of nice places to visit. You could go to the famous beaches like Boracay, Dakak, Puerto Galera, Subic, and Panglao Island. If you like spelunking you can go to the Sagada and Cagayan North. If you are a mountaineer you can go to Mt. Apo, Mt. Cristobal, Mt. Banahaw, and Mt. Pulag. If you like the city life, you can stay in Metro Manila, Cebu City, Davao City, and Tagbilaran City.
Actually, those places I mentioned are just some of which I am familiar with. There are a lot more places you can go and a lot of things to do. You will never get bored here.
Thirdly, living here is cheap. You can rent a decent home for $200. You can find houses lower than that if you really know where to look.
Food is also cheap. Transportation is cheap.
If you go to the really rural places, do you know that you can buy a land for $500?
Plus a lot of people can speak good English here so communication won’t be a problem.
